The Invisible Hand

“I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’ calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it.” Isaiah 46:9-11

Dear Friends & Family,

Just as the Sovereign God of the Universe ordains the seasons of the earth, so also does He ordain the events of our lives. While the younger, less experienced Believer may have difficulty looking back and seeing this “Invisible Hand” in their own life (they, simply having far less life to observe and draw from), the older, more experienced Christian has plenty of content to consider.

Very much like the story of Joseph, the child of God can look back over their life and see the gracious Hand of Providence guiding and directing as He orchestrates our very steps and all of those around us, working all things together for our good and for His glory. Even in the pain and “dark Providences” of life, the Believer can see and attest to the Lord’s ultimate goodness and absolute sovereignty.

It’s been rightly said that “Human pride loathes the suggestion that God orders everything, controls everything, rules over everything. The carnal mind, burning with enmity against God, abhors the Biblical teaching that nothing comes to pass except according to His eternal decrees.” (Pastor John MacArthur, “Reformed Soteriology”)

No, the events of our lives are not capricious, random, lucky, or coincidental. The discerning Christian should strike these words from their vocabulary. Instead, these events come to us from a loving Heavenly Father who “declares the end from the beginning and from ancient times, things not yet done.” His counsel and His purposes will stand forever. These truths should promote peace for the child of God.
